Major Highlights of David’s Life
1. David is anointed king of Israel by the prophet Samuel at around 13 years old, 1 Samuel 16:12-13.
2. David served King Saul by playing music in the palace, 1 Samuel 16:22-23.
3. David defeated Goliath at 15 years of age, 1 Samuel 17:1-58.
4. David, at 25, covenanted with Jonathan (King Saul’s son), then was banished by King Saul from his court because of jealously, yet he was made commander of the Israelite army because King Saul feared the people. Also, David’s success as a warrior earned him the right to marry King Saul’s daughter Michal, 1 Samuel 18:1.
5. King Saul, for ten years, tried to kill David many times. He chased him all over the land, however, during this same time David gained more victories against God’s enemies, had people join with him, and gained the love and respect of the people of Israel, 1 Samuel 19-2 Samuel 1.
6. David, at 35 and after King’s Saul’s death, was made King of Judah. For the next seven years King David fights with Abner, Saul’s old army commander, for the rulership of all of Israel and Jerusalem. Then at age 42, almost 30 years since being anointed king by Samuel, King David is made ruler of all Israel, 2 Samuel 2-5.
7. For the next 20 years David conquered the surrounding enemies of God, brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, and made Israel a great prosperous nation, 2 Samuel 6-10.
8. David at 62 years old, took a break from war, and instead had an affair with a married woman named Bathsheba, which led to him lying and eventually the murder of Bathsheba’s husband Uriah. God then sent the prophet Nathan to expose David’s great sins and pronounce judgment on the child conceived from the affair and calamity upon David’s household, 2 Samuel 11-12.
9. For the last 13 years of David’s reign as King, he faced many kinds of troubles in his family, (a) his children fought amongst themselves (Amnon was killed by Absalom after Amnon raped his sister), 1 Samuel 13; (b) Absalom then tried to take the Kingdom from him and was put to death, 1 Samuel 15-18; and then, (c.) Adonijah, David’s son, tried to steal the Kingdom from David when he was old and was also put to death, 1 Kings 1-2.
10. King David, at 75 years old after reigning for 40 years, made his son Solomon King of Israel and soon after died, 1 Kings 1:37.
