1 Corinthians 12:10, “…to another prophecy.”

The next spiritual gift that Paul lists is the “gift of prophecy.”  Prophecy is, “a supernatural message that brings edification, exhortation, and comfort,” 1 Corinthians 14:3.  In other words, prophecy is speaking on behalf of God a message to people who need to hear His voice. It is not man’s opinions or thoughts; it is literally giving voice to the very heart of God.

Many times with prophecy the flesh (thoughts of man) can enter in and people who claim to be “prophets” can try to usurp their will and ideas upon people by using the phrase, “The Lord has said…”  However, the Bible plainly teaches that prophecy is simply bringing a message to someone from God that build’s them up (edifies), encourages them (exhorts) and comforts them (brings peace).

If the “prophetic word” brings discouragement or places a person’s focus on man, then you can be sure it is not from God.  Always test every prophecy with the Word of God, what God is speaking to you personally, and the council of spiritual leaders who can help you discern the will of God.

A Biblical example of the gift of prophecy would be when Peter preached on the day of Pentecost and quoted Joel to the people describing that God was wanting to pour out His Spirit on all flesh. When the people heard that God was speaking to them about their generation they were encouraged to draw near to God, receive salvation, and be filled with the Spirit, Acts 2:16-21.

A modern example of the gift of prophecy would be the time I held a young man in my arms and said, “Jesus wants me to tell you just like I am holding you now, He is holding you in His arms and pouring out His love upon you.”  The next moment tears gushed down his face as he began to feel the comfort of God heal his many hurts.

Paul also said in 1 Corinthians 14:1-25 that he believed everyone should seek the gift of prophecy because it is so beneficial both for the church and unbelievers.  1 Corinthians 14:1, “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.”

Are you open to God giving you the gift of prophecy?

  1. Have you ever given a prophetic word- if yes, what was the word? If no, are you open for Him to give you one in the future?
  2. Next time you’re in church or in a Bible study ask God to use you in the gift of prophecy.
  3. Always be sure to prophesy according to the Spirit of God and the set order of the leadership around you, 1 Cor. 14:32-33.
