Psalm 91:4, “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
In the above Psalm, the author encourages the righteous to believe and trust God to protect them from all the harm of the enemy. Some have taken this Psalm to mean that nothing bad will ever happen to good people, but people like David would never have thought that. David was in many battles and saw good people die and suffer for the cause of God’s Kingdom. Before sending his men into battle, David would most likely have encouraged them with these kinds of words to remind them that no evil would harm them, even if they were killed or injured because they were on God’s side.
All throughout this Psalm, God used the imagery of a battle and incorporated it into spiritual terms.
Today, you should be comforted by the fact we will have divine protection in life no matter what attacks we face from our satanic enemies.
Paul used the same imagery of warfare in Ephesians 6:12-13, “12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
Though I believe the direct application is for us in a spiritual sense when the Devil attacks, I still believe we can pray for protection in this life from whatever is trying to harm us. One time I was driving to church and the car in front of me crashed into the car in front of it. I slammed on my brakes and began to pray. Within moments, I could see from my rearview mirror, that the cars behind me were going to crash into me. Instead, God shielded me and the cars crashed all around me. I was untouched. I witnessed God’s physical protection.
Another time, I was in a serious car crash (because a man ran a red light) and my wife’s ankle was broken; however, all four of my children were safe. Protection looks different at different times but, even if we die, we are protected from God’s judgment. I will trust God, in each and every situation, and believe He covers both my body and my soul. Max Lucado wrote, “With time you can learn where to go for nourishment, where to hide for protection, where to turn for guidance. Just as your earthly house is a place of refuge, so God’s house is a place of peace.”
God promised to protect and guard us from the Devil and all of his spiritual attacks; and, He has even given us hope to pray in all dangerous situations — like war, accidents and natural disasters. Whatever we face in life, let us put on the full armor of God and stand our ground, because God is with us and promised His faithfulness will be our shield!

- Thank God, through Jesus Christ, for His salvation which brings protection from all the Devil’s spiritual attacks.
- Declare God’s victory in your life, with the Word of God, over whatever spiritual battle you may be facing.
- Live courageously because God is your Protector.
