John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
In today’s passage, Jesus gave the promise of spiritual freedom for all to receive. The teachings and the words Jesus spoke, now found in the Bible, are the truth; and all those who believe Him and do what He says will be completely set free from sin. All throughout Jesus’s ministry He taught that He was not only able to save His people from sin’s penalty, but also its power and presence. He said in John 8:36, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” To be “free indeed,” means to never return back to sin’s bondage and slavery.
The same Holy Spirit that cleanses our spiritual souls from sin is also able to completely lead us out of every temptation and deliver us from every evil thing. That is why Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:13, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Sin was never meant to be in the disciple’s life, nor does it have any power over our lives.
Disciples of Christ are no more to have sin in their lives than an airplane is to have holes in its wings.
Do you admit that without Jesus you were bound to sin and its consequences? Then admit and confess with Jesus you are free from sin and all its bondage! Joyce Meyer wrote, “Nobody can be set free from a problem until they’re willing to admit they have one.” Sin is a disease, Jesus is the cure. Sin is an addiction, Jesus is the remedy. Sin is a prison, Jesus is the deliverer. Sin is a slave master, Jesus is the emancipator. Sin is a stain, Jesus is the cleansing. Sin is a lie, Jesus is the truth. Sin is destruction, Jesus is restoration. Sin is death, Jesus is life.
What if you do sin as a Christian? Repent and desire to never do it again. John wrote, “1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2). Though the disciple can still sin and be forgiven, the first and most important command is to not sin.
Therefore, “Will you believe the truth of Jesus and be set free from sin or will you believe the lies of Satan and live in continual sin?” Make a choice today to be a disciple of Christ and decide to know the truth of Jesus Christ and be set from free from all your sins!

Action
- Learn the truth by studying God’s Word.
- Ask Jesus to set you free from all of your sins.
- By the power of the Holy Spirit, live by the truth of God and remain free from sin (Psalm 119:9). If you do sin, be quick to repent and return to following the path of truth and freedom.
