John 14:16, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”

Have you ever been in a tough situation and said to yourself, “I wish I had an expert to talk to about this and get their help?” Maybe you felt you needed a “marriage expert” during a rough patch in your relationship with your spouse, or a “family expert” to get through to your kids, or a “financial expert” the last time you needed to make an important money decision or a “life expert” when you felt overwhelmed with your daily routine? If you’ve ever wanted help in any of these areas; Jesus’ promise of sending a Helper is for you!

Jesus promised that after He left for heaven, He would send a Helper to be with His disciples. The person of the “Trinity,” He is referring to as the “Helper,” is the Holy Spirit. The Greek word for “helper,” means, “counselor, advocate, strengthener and comforter.”

The Holy Spirit is all the help from God we will ever need. Even when God uses other people to help us, it still will be as a result of the Holy Spirit.

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “When you have no helpers, see your helpers in God. When you have many helpers, see God in all your helpers. When you have nothing but God, see all in God. When you have everything, see God in everything. Under all conditions, stay thy heart only on the Lord.”

Think how privileged the disciples were to have Jesus around them all the time to ask their questions and receive help in times of need. Now imagine how disappointed they must have been when He said He was going to leave them and go back to heaven. Jesus made it clear that they wouldn’t be sad for long because He was going to send them the ever-present Holy Spirit to abide with them and in them forever. The Helper would not only be for them, but also for all the disciples after them, even unto the end of the age (Acts 2:38-39).

Isn’t that awesome? Jesus wanted all His disciples, for all times, to have the exact same relationship with Him as the original twelve. Every disciple, no matter how old they are or where they live or what they are going through, will have an all-powerful Helper living on the inside of them.

Take some time, today, to consult with your Helper about all the plans and purposes God has for your life. You’re not alone; your Helper is with you!

  1. Ask the Father, in Jesus’ name, for the Holy Spirit to help you in any tough situations you are facing. Learn to wait on Him.
  2. Seek God’s Word to have the advice confirmed.
  3. Act on the advice and when it works out for good, be sure to give God the praise!
