Often times we want Jesus to do things for us because of our great needs. Yet, when we are asked if we want to get well we respond with excuses. Thankfully Jesus is willing and able to do a miracle in our lives if we do what He says. May our faith come in line with God’s desires to see our lives changed!

THE SEVEN SIGNS OF JOHN

  1. Changing water into wine (John 2:1-11).
  2. Healing the royal official’s son (John 4:46-54).
  3. Healing the paralytic (John 5:1-15).
  4. Feeding the 5000 (John 6:5-14).
  5. Jesus walking on water (John 6:16-24).
  6. Healing the blind man (John 9:1-7).
  7. The raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-45).

John 20:30-31, “30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

SERMON TEXT

John 5:1-15, “1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.

5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.”

BREAKDOWN

  1. Jesus loves to come to where the hurting and abandoned are to change their situation (vs. 1-4).
  2. Not everyone who is sick wants to get well; that is why Jesus requires our faith (vs. 5-7).
  3. Jesus heals us because He is our Healer and came to reveal the Kingdom of Heaven on earth (v. 8).
  4. Jesus doesn’t care about the religious traditions of men- He cares about setting people free (vs 9-13).
  5. Jesus always reminds us that hell is far worse than anything we could imagine to help encourage us not to live in sin (v. 14). Mark 9:45-48.
  6. Your testimony is God’s way of telling others about His power (v. 15). Matthew 10:28.

FOUR THINGS TO CONSIDER

  1. Do you want to get well?
  2. Do want to obey Jesus rather than man?
  3. Do you want to live holy?
  4. Do you want to be a bold witness for Jesus?

Only those who truly want to experience the radical power of God and are willing to do whatever it takes will be changed!
