Do you know that all our forefathers had a much different view of sanctification and holiness than 99% of those preaching today in our Trinitarian Pentecostal churches?
When you hear buzz phrases like:
- “Nobody’s perfect”
- “I’m beautifully broken”
- “Only God can judge me”
- “God’s still working on me”
- “Everybody sins”
- “Once I’m saved, I will always be saved, no matter what I do”
- “As long as I don’t commit the unpardonable sin- I can’t sin my way out of God’s grace”
- “Romans 7 explains my current battles with the flesh– those things I don’t wanna do, I do because my flesh is too strong”
You can be sure of two things:
1. It is entirely unbiblical.
&
2. They have ZERO connection to pentecostal teachings of holiness and sanctification.
EXAMPLES IN PENTECOSTAL HISTORY
Take for examples the three largest Trinitarian pentecostal denominations;
1. ASSEMBLY OF GOD // This was the original statement of the Assembly of God for sanctification until the 1960’s— “Entire sanctification is the will of God for all believers, and should be earnestly pursued by walking in obedience to God’s Word.”
2. CHURCH OF GOD // Currently from the main Church of God website, “Although some would define sanctification as a suppression of the Adamic nature, or a continuing process of cleansing and consecration, the Bible makes it clear that the experience is definite and compete at once, and the progressive process of consecration and growing in grace comes after the individual has experienced the crucifixion and eradication of the Adamic nature.”
3. CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST // From a COGIC website, “COGIC saints affirm, ‘I am saved, sanctified, baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost.” and “Sanctification is ‘that gracious and continuous operation of the Holy Ghost, by which He delivers the justified sinner from the pollution of sin, renews his whole nature in the image of God and enables him to perform good works.’”
4. FOUR SQUARE // Sister McPherson, the founder, taught, “Actual transgressions and inbred sin were all taken out at one time, when we entered the fountain of blood… I told them that I believed in the finished work of Calvary [like William Durham]… and as for holiness, why, without holiness no man shall see the Lord. We must be saved, must be sanctified, but ’tis all through the precious atoning blood of Jesus Christ.”McPherson, Aimee Semple. Therefore, for all you attend a pentecostal church, please answer the following questions:
- When was the last time you heard a message on entire sanctification? Being free from all sin? Knowing your identity in Jesus to live completely holy?
- When was the last time you heard refuted from your pulpit- “once saved always saved doctrine,” fleshly/carnal Christianity,” “continual willful sin,” and “non-judgmental/tolerant/lukewarm Christianity?”
Just for a sense of how far we have fallen consider the one and only book written by our founder in the U.S., William Seymour, “Sanctified on the Cross;”
“God is calling His people to true holiness in these days. We thank God for the blessed light that He is giving us. He says in 2 Tim. 2:21, “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use.” He means for us to be purged from uncleanness and all kinds of sin. Then we shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. Sanctification makes us holy and destroys the breed of sin, the love of sin and carnality. It makes us pure and whiter than snow. Bless His holy name!”
Sadly, now most of our pastors and leaders are more concerned with the style of their glasses, tight pants, tattoos, and allegorical sermons that continually teach Christians are the sick, dead and blind people in gospels needing another “break through.” What a waste of our history- may God have mercy and raise up godly sanctified preachers again, filled with the Holy Spirit and POWER!
John Wesley said, “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon Earth.”
